Can you maintain my site for me?

Yes!

Wolf Valley offers several options for web site maintenance. Read about our Web Site Maintenance Service.

How much does it cost to build a web site?

Anywhere from $100.00 to several thousand. It all depends on what you want or need.

There are many, many variables that go into the total cost of a website. It's a lot like building a house.  It depends on how big you want your "house" (web site) and what features you want in it. Do you want a single story house or a multi-story.  How big will the rooms need to be, etc. Your own list of wants and needs can vary drastically, and the price depends on all of these variables.

Then there is the consideration of your "wants" versus your "needs". You may WANT a jacuzzi, but maybe because of budget constraints we need to install a regular tub. All of this must fist be considered.

In order to determine the cost for your particular project, we need to obtain a firm grasp of your needs. A huge database driven, flash site with shopping cart will cost more than a standard HTML, template based site. We will need to determine what technologies will be needed to accomplish your objectives.

We provide no-obligation free estimates based on your specific needs. Contact us today. We will work with you to determine your needs and accomplish your goals for the lowest possible price.

How long does it take to build a web site?

A days. A week. Two months. It all depends. The time it takes to complete a web site depends on several factors. We can give you an idea of timeline when we know what your needs are.  The first thing to consider is what type of web site you want to create and the features you need.  It's a lot like building a house.  Contact us for a free estimate!

Think of the web server (your hosting account) as a piece of land, ready for development. First of all there's nothing there but the land (web space), and an address (your domain name).

Once you have the land you can build a house (web site), so that when people come to your address (domain name / URL) they will see your house (web site) and be able to visit with you.

Just like a house you need a firm foundation, the sub-floor, wall panels, insulation, etc.  This is like the technology your web site will be built upon, the programming that your web site is built with. Just like a house, the technology (foundation) will all depend on what type of house and how big of a building you will need.

Other items (web site features) affect the way a house works, like the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, or a security system. These would equate to the extra things you want on your web site, like a form, a forum, a scrolling news box, a way for people to sign up to receive your newsletter, video streaming, a photo gallery, etc.

Then there is the consideration of your wants versus your needs. You may WANT a jacuzzi, but maybe because of budget constraints we need to install a regular tub. All of this must fist be considered before we begin the building process.

A house can't be built until the blue print is created. It is the same for a good web site.  It takes planning first and you need to know what you are doing.  Would you let a florist design your blueprint for your house? It takes knowledge and experience to plan a good web site. Once the main decisions have been made then the building can start.

Once the house (web site) plan is in place it's time to build the foundation, then when the frame work is in place we errect the walls - then paint the walls and install carpet and window dressings. This is the same as creating the graphical design of the site - the way it LOOKS.

Once the house is built, you move your stuff in.  This is like placing content (text and photos) into your web site.

Then everything is tested, final approval is given and the site goes live. That's like doing the final walk through of a house and then giving you the keys to your newly build home.

A house isn't quite a home until it has people. So, we submit your site to search engines to help people find your house.  And then there's SEO - search engine optimization - to help get you even more visitors. But that's another topic.

Should I maintain my own site or hire someone to manage it?

Maybe!

The right answer depends on your situation.  If you have no time for it because you simply have  too much on your plate already, or you just 'can't get the knack of it' and prefer to avoid doing it, then you may need a professional to handle it for you.

If, on the other hand, you happen to enjoy updating your site and have the appropriate tools and knowledge at your disposal, then you may be happier maintaining your own site.

We're happy to help you, either way.  We have training and online help available, or we can set up a maintenance package that suits your needs.

What is SEO and do I need it? Can I do it myself?

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion. Typically, the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence. See Wikipedia for more.

Is it important?

SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is the process of structuring a web site so that it is found and indexed by search engines in the most effective manner possible. Any business or nonprofit website should posses search engine optimization elements. This makes your web site and its content attractive, relevant and visible to search engines and able to be easily found via web searchers. Studies have shown that the vast majority of users find websites by using the major search engines.  It is not a matter of "build it and they will come". People have to be able to find our website.

Should hire someone to do my SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for me or do it myself?

SEO is a tedious and ongoing process.  If you do not keep up with the latest and greatest techniques, then you can not effectively improve your search engine rankings. We keep up with all the latest techniques because that is our job! SEO done properly takes constant supervision and frequent updates to your site and/or your ad campaigns. If you have the time and inclination to learn all there is to know about SEO, AND have the time it takes, you could do it yourself.  If you want a professional to handle it - we can help.

How to keep (or delete) copies of your email on the server

If you want to keep a copy of your email on the server to access from another location you may elect to keep a copy of your email on the server. CAUTION: This may cause your email box to become full. Use this option wisely.

In Outlook:

Tools > Options > Select the 'Mail Setup' tab. Click 'Email Accounts'. Select 'View or change existing email accounts'.  Select the account you wish to alter and click "change". In the pop up window click on 'More Settings'. In the 'advanced' tab on the next pop up window check (or un check to stop leaving mail on the server) the 'Leave a copy of messages on the server' box under 'delivery'.

If you are checking this box for the first time, you will need to also decide how many days before the email is removed. PLEASE NOTE: email will not be 'removed' from the server at all until you have checked your email regardless of how many days you specify here. What this setting does is keeps READ email on the server for the specified amount of time to allow you to check email from multiple locations even after you have downloaded a copy to your email client.  If you have it set to keep a copy on the server for 3 days, and you check your email with your email client at work, a copy of the email will remain on the server for three days so you can check your email from another location for three days after you first download a copy.

CAUTION: This may cause your email box to become full very quickly. If your email box becomes full you will NOT be able to receive more email until you remove some email from your account ON THE SERVER.

In Eudora:

Click on the email 'persona' you wish to alter. In the pop up box select the 'incoming mail' tab and check (or uncheck) the 'leave mail on the server' tab.

Can I have more than one domain pointed to my account?

Yes. You may have as many as you like.

Basically the added domain(s) will clone the content of your original domain.. For example If you have www.xyz.com and you also have www.abc.com.  Your original website is xyz.com, but you would like abc.com to have the same content. This is what you need! If you would like www.xyz.com To point to subdomain.xyz.com, we can do that too! Contact us for further information.

I already have a domain name, can I use it with your hosting?

Yes, if you already have a domain name registered you can use it with our hosting plans.

The first step is going to our dedicated Domain Name and Web Hosting site (www.wolfvalleyhosting.net) and selecting the hosting plan of your choice.  Once you have selected a hosting plan, and paid for it you will be able to access your hosting plan and point your domain name to the new hosting account when you are ready.

Note this will not transfer your domain name registration from your current registrar where you registered the domain, this will only transfer the hosting if it is already hosted.

Iif you want to fully transfer the domain NAME to our registrar and extend the registration for one year please go to www.WolfValleyHosting.net and click on "Donain Names" and follow the directions to transfer your domain.

You may also need login into your current domain control panel where ever you registered the domain name orginally and modify the NAMESERVERS or DNS to ours, our nameservers are available inside your account once you sign up. You must make those changes in order for your website to be live.

Why do I get spam?

Spam Robots or Spiders are programs that “crawl” the Internet, searching web pages for e-mail addresses or “mailto” tags. Once found, the e-mail addresses are added to private spam lists or even to bulk e-mail CDs. To prevent these SpamBots from ever finding your e-mail address, follow these tips:

  • Don’t enter your e-mail address into guest books.
  • Never respond to spam with a request to remove your name from their mailing list.
  • Remove your e-mail address from any web pages unless it is protected from spam gathering tools. (there are several methods to achieve this).
  • Don’t use the standard html “mailto:” tag. There are JavaScripts that eliminate the need for this tag but still result in an e-mail hyperlink.
  • Consider using forms in place of mailto links.

How long will it take for my site to propagate or be seen?

Once you register a new domain or transfer an existing one, you must let your domain registrar (the company with whom you registered your domain) know where your site will be residing (unless you registered it at Wolf Valley) so they know where to point your domain. You do this by providing your registrar with your Web host's name server information.

The Internet is a worldwide network, and is not based on one central computer. Therefore, when your registrar sends out the information that your domain needs to point to a new server, it takes several days for this information to spread to all the computers on the Internet, all over the world. Once all computers on the Internet "realize" the name servers and website to which your domain is now pointing, propagation is complete.

This process is not controlled by your domain registrar, your Web host, or any other single factor. The fact that it is not a centralized process may contribute to the amount of time it takes to occur.
