We Had a Snow Day! Print E-mail
Blog Bytes

Many times this winter weather forecasters have predicted snow for this state. But the predictions always seemed to fall just short of the Jackson area. I watched as my friends in surrounding states reported snowfall.  They enjoyed 'snow days' and posted photos on-line of their yards and houses covered in the fluffy white icy stuff.  But there was none for us here in the Jackson area.   If wanting it was enough, we should have had buckets of the stuff! I did the snow dance, I looked longingly at the skies, I wished and wished for some snow.

Snow Day - Wolf Valley Feb 2010Contrary to what some people believe, we do indeed have snow in Australia. I enjoyed snow on the mountains in winter back in my home state of Tasmania, Australia. I miss the snow so I really wanted some.  We had a hard freeze here this winter. We also had a very small amount of snowfall that barely accumulated and just didn't last. Nothing to really get your snowball fix with.  I thought maybe that would be as good as it got this winter.  Still, I waited and I hoped.

Then, after several disappointments, finally at about 9pm Thursday February 2010 in Ridgeland, Mississippi - it started to snow. Lightly at first, then harder and harder.  There were sounds of playing and laughing as the kids danced in the street at 10pm that night - and again at 11pm, and midnight, and.. until 2pm. Don't worry, the neighbors weren't keeping their kids out all night - the playing and laughing from the 'kids' in the street was actually only me - the 'big kid' who just loves snow.  I stood there in my yard at midnight with my face turned to the sky, letting the snow fall on my face. And with every tiny, unique, amazing snowdrop that landed on my face, my eyelids, my tongue, I felt blessed.   I am grateful every day for being alive to enjoy these seemingly little things. To me, they are not just little things, they are tiny miracles wrapped up in every day life. Maybe it took beating cancer after I was told I would not survive to find immense joy and pleasure in a snowflake.  Snowflakes I was never supposed to live to see - but I did.  So I dance in the snow like a 5-year-old on Christmas.  I wish I could share that feeling of joy with everyone!   I finally went to bed about 2am after watching the snow fall for hours. I was confident that if it kept falling like it was we would get the Snow Day - Wolf Valley Feb 2010kind of snowfall that I had been longing for.

At 6am I awoken, sat bolt upright and jumped out of bed just like that kid at Christmas. I ran to the window and jumped up and down for joy.  A thick blanket of beautiful snow was covering everything.  Maybe I see joy in the simplest of things, but to me, it was beautiful and it made me smile. A huge cheek-aching smile!

There was enough snow in the forecast that schools and state offices were closed.  I had an appointment for the afternoon, but due to the amount of snow, we decided to postpone it.  So, Wolf Valley officially closed for the day, and we took a snow day!  Angie and I piled up the car with our photography equipment and took off to explore and take photos.

We went to the Ross Barnett Reservoir along The Trace, stopping along the way to wander along and take some photos.  We then went to downtown Jackson, and took photos of the Capitol building.  The streets were deserted.  Everything was quiet and wrapped in a thick blanket of snow. It was beautiful indeed.  We stopped and joined in with a group of people playing in the snow and building a giant snowman.  We saw Snow Day - Wolf Valley Feb 2010people sledding on whatever they had that would allow them to slide in the snow.  We saw other photographers out taking advantage of the not typical vision of Jackson.  For someone who usually feels the cold, I never seem to feel it at all when I am playing in the snow.  We then had a nice lunch at Corner Bakery on Flowood drive.  We enjoyed wonderful hot, tasty food while watching the snow continue to fall.  It was the perfect snowfall. Enough to cover everything and allow people to play.  But not enough to cause serious problems.

It was a great day.  A happy day.  A photography day.  A snow day!!  You're never too old to feel joy like a 5-year-old, and you're never too old for a snow day!

Blessings,

miranda
